As 2016 winds down,

As 2016 winds down, it’s hard to believe another year has passed! In the world of photography, you always seem like you are in a cycle of sorts. Beginning of the year, you have such high hopes. The middle of the year, you feel like you are drowning in work (a good thing). The end of the year, you wonder what happened to the year all.
Maybe it’s because I have such high expectations for myself. At the end of the year, I look back and wonder what I did. I have tried to look at the new year with plans and goals and resolutions but in end the end, I still feel lost. So let’s start again….

In 2017, I want to…
-Invest myself more fully into my photography business.
-Attempt a self-portrait with photoshop fun-ness.
-Be able to play confidently in Photoshop.
-Read something that inspires me business-y and personally.
-Find balance with food, exercise, family and life.
-Cut down and cut out things that are not helping to keep me balanced and happy.
-Believe in myself more.
-Write.
-Do more things that make me feel inspired, creative, and refreshed.
-Create my own weather more.

It’s a simple list, but it means more to me than most resolutions I have wrote in the past. It also shows me how much I have grown in the past year. I know I’m not done, but I’m happy with my progress. It’s me.

Musicals- Momma Mia

Musicals make my heart happy just like Momma Mia did last week. It was so amazing. I have watched over and over the movie with Meryl Streep. But there is just something about seeing it live on a stage. Makes my heart beat faster.

Two Fridays, several friends of mine and I made it into an evening to remember. We went down to CB’s Social Hour for supper. It was so unique.

One of the most unique restaurants that I’ve been to in a while. All of the platters are meant to be shared. So the four of us choose a couple of entrees and some sides to share. The mac and cheese was amazing as well as the roasted cauliflower. We got their chicken tacos with blackberry jalapeno sauce and the cassolet. It was all so unique and delicious! The tacos were a little spicy for me, but other than that amazing! Can’t wait to go back!

Then it was on to Momma Mia. Our seats were in the orchestra area — Row R. Our seats were about perfect for seeing the whole stage and being closer to the action!  It was such an amazing performance. Even the audience was dancing and singing along in their seats. (Confession: I was singing too, but softly.) CB's Social Hour, food, social, dinner, supper, broadway night, friends, company, night out, Springfield, Missouri, Momma Mia,

It was so good. My favorite part was when Sophie and Shy kissed the first time. Some kid yelled out ‘Yuck’ at the same time. Not even timed! But it was just perfect.I was so sad to have to leave.

The songs have been stuck in my head the last several weeks!

Q&A:What are you Most Proud of?

As a photographer, what are you most proud of?

There are so many moments that I have felt extremely proud of myself during. But I would have to say right now, I am mostly proud of my growth. How much I have changed since the beginning.  Sometimes you can see yourself slowly change other times its drastic. It is a really neat thing for me to actually see those moments. When it is glaringly obivious to me that a year ago, I couldn’t do something that I can now, etc.  It is a sign that I am growing and learning which is something that I am striving to do.

Recently where I can see a lot of growth is m at these group shoots I’ve been doing this year. My first shoot in January I felt awkward and unsure. However I shot for myself and took some pretty great shots. They were not exactly what the makeup company was looking for (which was okay). I was happy with them and that was what counted.

The latest one was at the end of August. Oh man, I felt confident in my skills. I felt like something had clicked. I felt like I had grown. I was so proud of my images and then I started to look at other s’ photos. When you are at these group shoots, everyone is at a different level. Needless to say, I felt a little like the underdog with the amount of  Photoshop knowledge I had. It has been hard to shake off that feeling of unworthy. But I have been impressed with my images. Yes, there are things that I wish I had done differently to fix it, but they still look amazing! I have seen some already showing up on the makeup company page!!! (So exciting!!!) If you want to check them out, they are called Isociety Cosmetics.

Top 10 Mistakes (so far)

rockAs a photographer, I love the fact that I am growing all the time! But with growth comes mistakes. Things that make you grow more… And I have definitely learned. So now I’m sharing them with you to help in case you need to hear this today.

Here is my top 10 mistakes/learning moments for now….

  1. Showing up for a wedding without a flash or batteries that worked! Luckily it turned out okay. Batteries were also brand new.       Learned?  to Double check all equipment, more than once. Check batteries as soon as you get them. No matter if you think it’s silly. Make sure you bring it all. Even if you don’t “think” you’ll need it. Who knows you might need it. Extras are not a bad thing!
  2. Reflectors and forgetting to use them. (On-going mistake)         Learned? Need to practice more with them. So I feel more confident. Reflectors help to give clients catch lights (little lights) in their eyes in camera. It really makes eyes pop!
  3. Not believing I’m worth the money.      Learning?  To believe my photography’s value. Trusting myself and my work. It is totally an on-going processes for me. I am harder on myself more than anyone really knows. (except for my hubby.) Sometimes even my “best” work, I think I could have done better.
  4. Not having clear goals of what and where I want to get.          Learning? To make those goals yearly and to start dreaming about the next 5-15 years of my business. I didn’t even know I wasn’t thinking that far ahead until one of my friends asked to be my receptionist in about 5 years. (Sweetie, thank you for that!) Now I have wrote down some goals and am working on creating secret goal boards on Pinterest.
  5. Not practicing enough.           Learning? To push myself with everything I purchase. To take the time and actually practice the new “toy” as I call it. Gaining skills through extra work.
  6. Being afraid to show my work at first and wondering what people would say.           Learning? To take the risk. Show my pictures and be okay whether people love it or hate it. Some people will love it and some on’t. I just need take the risk. (Be a friend to a photographer, tell us.)
  7. Comparing myself to my peers and my mentors.              Learning? To take my work and love where I am no. Being okay wit what I am creating. Being the best I can do for me. Trying to be happy for them on how much they are growing. Be happy where and for others who are tackling the same dream. (One of the hardest things to do sometimes.)
  8.  The belief that I can’t be a full-time photographer.         Learning? To take it one step at a time. Trusting God in what he wants to do with my photography business. Being faithful to the business and treating like it is an amazing awesome business (cause it is!). Treating my clients and possible clients as I want to be treated by a photographer. Desiring my business to be better and better.
  9. Forgetting Business Cards.              Learning? To have them everywhere I am. To have enough. To carry even when not shooting because you never know what conversation you are going to have that day. Handing them out in any situation I can. Cause a napkin is not that classy.
  10. Waiting on others to confirm that I am a photographer.              Learned? Not to wait for others to call me a photographer. Saying the word when talking about myself more. Not being afraid of saying that word aloud in reference to me.

I am a photographer…

California Vacation Pt 6

IMG_7828  Our last day in San Fransisco and in California happened to hit on the Fourth of July. I was super excited about seeing the fireworks! However I didn’t think about the crowds or how long of a day it would be before our flight the next morning. Our first stop was to the Fenton Creamery, which was the place that was in the movie UP! The food, I wouldn’t call the best ever… But that shake! Wow, I loved it!  IMG_7888

After lunch, it was time to turn in the car and become subway riders…. Look at one of the few pictures the grump let me take. (For all the time, I lived in New York. I never took one picture in the subway. I have a pictures someone took of me there, but that was it…)IMG_7893

Our plan was to take the subway til we got to where the Cable Cars were and then ride them up to the pier. Neither of us counted on how many other people would have the same idea. While we waited, I got a couple of fun pictures of the cars! We waited for about an hour and a half til they let us jump on in the middle part where NO ONE was sitting for like 4 cars…  IMG_7902 IMG_7931 IMG_7934 IMG_7949 IMG_7968

The pier area was amazing. There was a Ghirardelli sign and a store! Plus there was even a little mall area.
IMG_8048

It was amazing to see how many people had already claimed their seats for the fireworks at like 1 or 2 p.m. It was crazy!IMG_8061 IMG_8066

Since we had an early dinner and both of us didn’t want to wait forever for dinner. We decided on an early dinner as well at Fog Harbor! There were massive windows for the beautiful views of the bay area. And the food was amazing!!! SEAFOOD!!!! IMG_8086 IMG_8091 IMG_8138

After a long discussion over dinner about where to watch the fireworks at, we decided to look and see if there were any firework cruise still available and do it. There was! IMG_8148 We went out on the Blue and Gold Ship for the fireworks and got to see a view of the city from the bay… However, there was a little fog and it was a little cold.IMG_8172

But the fog made the fireworks super neat!!! IMG_8234 IMG_8245IMG_8342

After the fireworks, we walked/hiked back to the subway station… Those hills were horrible…. But I did see a hotel I want to look into the Sir Francis Drake …  IMG_8340

We got back to the hotel in time for a two hour nap or less and then hopped on the hotel shuttle to catch our plane. IMG_8354 IMG_8360

It definitely was a whirlwind vacation with a lot of hiccups but man, was it fun! I can’t wait until the roadtrip. IMG_8367

Reflection — 1st Wedding Expo

bridal show, wedding show, expo, booth, wedding booth, photographer, design, Missouri, succulents, brides, peacock feathers, laceAs most of you know, I signed up for my first Wedding Expo as a vendor on August 20. A lot of thoughts have been rolling through my head since setting up and the first client walked through until now. I’m sure I will keep thinking until the next one. (Yes, I will be doing another one again… Probably January)

Overall, it was a really good experience. Lebanon Area Bridal Show was so much fun! I can’t wait until next years!!!

What went well.
1. There were a lot of people there. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting. I did not go with a larger show for my first one because I wanted to see how it went. I wanted to see how I was.

2. I was able to talk to not only brides and potential brides but as well as family members and maid of honors. Being a bride before has given me a little more understanding about the pressures the brides and everyone is under. So I didn’t feel hurt when someone said they had to think about it. I remember going back and forth with my mom about money and everything.

3. The vendors. I seriously came to the bridal show with an open mind. I wanted to see what happened. Who all comes and see if I could make some new contacts. I wasn’t “scared” of my competition. I wanted to get to know more people. I believe in collaboration over competition!  … Anyways, vendors were even interested in my photography. Everyone is always looking for something whether family, headshots, and boudoir.

4. Inviting a friend to come with me! Sam was amazing this past Saturday. She was an extension of me and a perfect partner. I think, between the two of us we talked to everyone! Also having a second person with you gives you someone to freak out to. Who helps you calm down and be ready for people.

5. Having a drawing for not just brides but for anyone who wanted to sign up. I decided to do a door prize, but I also wanted to do something at my booth. My first thought was a boudoir session, but I wanted to see how receptive boudoir photos were at a show. So I decided to do a little basket with cute decor and chocolate. For me, it was the best choice. And it was so much fun to offer something for free and also talk about wedding stuff.

6. Getting my name out more. Before the event, I had been feeling a little frustrated like a normal business owner. I had decided that I need a few ideas of getting my name out there more. This was definitely a great plan for that!

What didn’t go well

  1.  No one immediately signed up. But that was seriously okay. When I was shopping for wedding, most of the time I would have to get pricing and then get back to people. It worked better for my mom who was helping me out. I was one of those people overwhelming the brides just a little bit more. Being a bride is stressful, there is so many different things that you have to do and plan and get. Your head is spinning!
  2. The last 30 mins, everyone was waiting for the drawing and I guess watching fashion show… So it dragged by– especially for me with a sinus/allergy problem. I wanted a nap on my couch.

3. My sinus/allergies. It was definitely rough for me. (So glad to have Sam with me.)

4. The door drawings at the end. I had kind of expected the door drawings to go on the entire time the event was. So I was hoping that my name with my drawing would be announced before the end. It wasn’t but I learned a lot from the show.

5. The waiting… … … … … … … … … …  I didn’t see immediate results. So that means, it’s going to be a lot of waiting to see if people decide on me. Yes, if you were at the show, you will totally eventually recieve an email from me. But for me to see results of the show, realistically, probably next year? Or who knows?

What Inspires me: Boho

What inspires me? That is actually a horrible hard question. One style that has caught my attention is the “boho” idea. Yeah, I know it’s a super popular style out there right now. However that doesn’t bother me, because this style reminds me of my first love “hippies!” I guess you could call it a upgraded style for me.

I am loving the uniqueness of it all. The randomness that goes together. If you ever met me in person, you will find out quickly that I love a variety of different things –from music styles to movies to clothing. So any style that combines a whole bunch of awesomeness makes me happy! Then add in the greenery! Ah! I love it!

I have an entire board on Pinterest all leaning toward Bohemian — decor, ideas that have that feel and even clothes! I love it. So if you are into this style or this is you, send me a message and let’s talk about doing a shoot! I would love to help capture this amazing style.

Here are some pictures from my board that just make me happy! boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor, salt lamp, beautiful, greenery boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor, salt lamp, beautiful, greeneryshelf, boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor, salt lamp, beautiful, greenery mirrors, boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor, salt lamp, beautiful, greenery boho, inspires me, inspiration, amazing, awesomeness, decor, salt lamp, beautiful, greenery, wood tier

My Gear=Canon

It’s a discussion I hear every day, week, month, year. Canon vs Nikon or something else. Well, for me, my gear has been Canon and probably always will be. It’s honestly not because I hate Nikon or anything else. I actually have never shot with it so yeah.

Walmart. Yup, my first “real” camera came from Walmart. Hate to break it to you, it doesn’t matter where you get it as long as you take it and learn it. I took my senior graduation money and bought my self a Canon Rebel G (film camera). I was so in love with it. I took my best friend’s senior pictures with it. It was so much fun. I fell in love with the idea of taking pictures of people.

Canon, powershot, gear, gear I carry, capture the moment, photography, NikonWhen college came, I bought this amazing little Canon PowerShot, digital. It was smaller than my phone and fit quite conveniently in my pocket. I loved it to pieces. Well in the first year of having it, I dropped it in the sand, the lens stopped working, and there was some other problem with it. Lol, I know with all those problems you would have thought I’dhave given up with Canon. However, it wasn’t like that. When I contacted their customer service people, they were the sweetest people possible. They were very helpful and were able to help me get the warrant on it. I still keep buying that type of camera. They are the best little cameras. I think the one I have now I’ve had since 2008 (?)

So when I went to buy my first digital SLR camera in 2009, I went straight to the Canon camera collection. Their camera was almost the same as my film camera from forever ago. It even took the same lenses. So I guess it was a no-brainer for me. It was the cheaper/more cost affective way to upgrade to digital. Now as I know more about the cameras I’m buying and starting to upgrade. Again I’m sticking with Canon. My lenses fit and I don’t have to buy different ones. (though I’d love to upgrade a few of those)

It’s not that I think one is better than the other. I think it’s about what brand you started with and fell in love with. Whether it was a film camera you had, or your family had. Or you just picked the cheapest option. It doesn’t matter as long as you practice and learn your specific camera!

What do you have? Why?
Let’s start a discussion… Leave a comment or send me a message.
Tell me what you Love and why.

California Vacation Pt 4

Early-ish (early for Jon, late for me) the next morning, we took off toward Yosemite. The Sierra Mountain Lodge, the bed and breakfast we were staying at, including a book of best ways to go to the park, etc. It was super helpful!!! Sadly the drive was still long due to cars but the other way would of been worse. Holiday weekend, folks… holiday weekend.
California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

Scenic drive followed by line of cars… I guess you could say I have a few of these…  California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

Like seriously there were cars, trucks, buses, campers everywhere!!! California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

We finally found parking for lunch at the lodge and by the visitor’s store. But that was it!  It was still super pretty, just a ton of people. California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

As we decided to leave the park, we came upon this field across from El Captain that no one had stopped at. It was just a simple field. No bathrooms, food, attractions, etc. Just a glorious field that made you stop and wonder at the amazingness around you. That field was worth it all. It was the feeling I had expected to have in the whole park but yeah… The field came at the exact time I needed to calm down and recenter myself in my world. I wanted to stay longer, but… it was time to head off.California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

As we were leaving the park, we passed this overlook. It was so packed that we didn’t stop. But this picture I took with my iPhone shows the amazingness. The park was so beauitufl and amazing and wonderful. I can see why Ansel Adams stopped here and just captured for awhile. The next time we go, I am totally doing a photography journey. We didn’t know they had them otherwise I would of done one! California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

The truly saddest part of the trip was finding out that they closed the Redwood area down just a day before we arrived. You couldn’t even see them from the road… I saw pictures and a fake short one, but that was it. I told Jon we are totally coming back someday just to explore the park more and hike!!! California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

The good part about leaving the park early was we had time for a good dinner and still time to hang out on the porch at the bed and breakfast… Definitely loved staying there. I really want to go back and stay at more bed and breakfasts. California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

The random cat might have been my favorite part of it. California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

The Instamax camera I took with me definitely got a work out today.  I also learned a little more about what settings to use. Now to play with it more so I can continue to get better at them. California, vacation, Yosemite, national park, mountains, ansel adams, redwoods, cars, holiday weekend, packed, fun, adventure

California Vacation Pt 3

Day 4 brought the Warner Brothers Studio Tour! When we were searching for things to do, we kept running into the super expensive things to do like Universe (which I will do next). Then we thought of what might be taping! It lead us to this studio tour! Though, we didn’t get to see the Big Bang Studio, we did get to see alot and learn a ton from our tour. We even got to see one studio in person! But sadly, no cameras were allowed on set. (It nearly killed me to not take any pictures) The lights alone on the ceiling impressive!!! More than 50 pointing at the audience!
IMG_6729

Waiting for our tour to start.

IMG_6296

Our awesome tour car. Our tour guy was pretty knowledgable and funny. But our tour was not talkative at all…

IMG_6303

Going into the “Jungle” area. Where they filmed some scenes from Pretty Little Liars, ER, and Jurrasic Park. IMG_6314

Hometown America was around the next corner. Most of the buildings had no distinguishing marks so they could be used in multiple movies.   IMG_6341

The Full House house. Most of the scenes were actually shot on the Studio lot only like one or two scenes were shot on location in San Fransisco. IMG_6369

There was even a set up to look like a Chicago subway area. IMG_6383

“We’re animaniacs
We have pay or play contracts
We’re zany to the max
There’s baloney in our slacks
We’re animany
Totally insaney
Here’s the shows name-y (changes from time to time)

Animaniacs”

IMG_6409

Buildings and even a subway looking area were not real. Just empty or went no where.  It was neat to see and think about the different movies they have done. IMG_6426

They had a Batman area as well as a Harry Potter area to wonder through. There was also an area with all of the Batman cars. IMG_6467 IMG_6482 IMG_6485 IMG_6565

At the end of the tour we were dropped off at the Warner Brothers Studio lot 49. It was basically an area that was hands on. There were different photo ops like the Friends’ Central Perk set. We also saw the academy awards, and even a learned a little about how to the movie/show came into being. IMG_6636

The lot also had a little video to show you the difference between words, sound effects and the music. It truly made a difference as we watched a piece of Gravity. (Btw is it good? I haven’t watched it yet)
IMG_6669

I would like thank YOU for all of your wonderfulness!!! IMG_6684

The real reason we should Warner Brothers Studio Tour.IMG_6697

The rest of day was kinda boring with lots of driving, interesting new fast food places like the place with tacos and fries. The day ended with us arriving at our amazing, gorgeous bed and breakfast place just outside of Yosemite! IMG_6844
