February | Self Portrait

I realized the other week during my Spring Break that I was putting off my self-portrait project. I was putting it off because I didn’t have the outfits or the ideas like some of the fantasy photographers I follow. I was putting it off because I was comparing myself to what they were doing. I was comparing my self. I was worrying about my self image. I was worried about how fat I have been becoming.

I was worrying about a whole host of things that I didn’t have any business worrying about because I’m not them. I’m not in the same place in this journey. I’m at the beginning of trying to take good self-portraits. I’m at the beginning of believing that I can take a good picture. I’m starting to collect things that would make a good picture. I’m at the beginning. I’m starting.

Everyone started someplace and I need to remember that.

So here is my super late should have been March self portrait but is February self-portrait.

At Home, Spring Break 2017

cats, naps, heat, cold, spring breakSomedays you just need to run around at about a mile a minute trying to get everything done. Other days you just need to take a deep breathe and take a nap with the cats around you.

This has definitely been a week of not doing very much. It has been a week of resting (naps -oh how I have missed them.), and decluttering. I think I have watched more movies in the last week on DVR than I have in the last two months. I think I have worked on the couch more this week than since summer. It definitely has not been the dream spring break, but it has been a break when I needed it.

The school that I work at has been becoming a Leader in Me school. For those who don’t know it’s teaching the 7 habits of highly effective people to the students. It’s something that I truly believe in. Anyways, this week has definitely been about Sharpening My Saw. Taking time for me to rest and come back and be more me.

Now, I know starting next week the rat race continues. but for today and this weekend I’m going to feel more and more like myself.

Here is a few photos from my super exciting Spring Break!

I froze when our propane went out and it was snowing all day! (What the heck! It’s supposed to be spring break!)  Found some amazing must-buy-soon things at Hobby Lobby & Michaels.

Colored my hair… Prepping for PURPLE in MAY!! (Stay tuned for that.) Houdini thought my hair smelled funny.

Did a little cleaning with some cat help, which they are currently being non-motivating currently… Squrriel is on the dog bed and Houdini is on the footstool. Both are sleeping… Saw Beauty and the Beast with a few of my friends opening night! (Amazing! Go see it now!)

Maybe next year, I’ll do something different… But for now, this is me…

Collaboration | Marie Antoinette

Back in December, one of my Kansas City model friends, Felicity said she was coming to Springfield in January. As Decemember passed on, my new friend Diana, from Diane Lee l Childhood & Lifestyle Portraiture,  had an idea of doing Marie Antoinette and invite some other photographers to join her on the shoot. I’m so happy I jumped on the opportunity! Even though I didn’t know that much about Marie Antoinette, I was super excited about going to the shoot.

For those like me who don’t know who Marie Antoinette is, she was the last queen of France before the French Revolution. Was the victim of a lot of gossip and also called a prostitute at one time.

Anyways… We meet at the Fireside Gallery on Commerical Street. If you have never been there, it is AMAZING!!! Exposed brick, tons of natural light, a barn door — definitely needs for a studio someday!

Felicity made a wonder Marie Antoinette and her boyfriend Zach did a great job stepping in a modeling too!

Models – Felicity and Zach
MUAH – Felicity
Styling – Diane Lee
Dress – The Porcelain Teacup

These images with Zach… AMAZING!!! I’m so glad he got to join us at our shoot in January.

Business Book | January 2017

January’s business book was Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. I have seen this book on so many photographers pages, artists pages, and every other page under the sun. I knew I wanted to read it, but sometimes you just have to wait for the season before it’s time. It was time this past month. And WOW, this book did not disappoint at all. It was amazing, wonderful and so much more.

Creatives like myself always seem to struggle with the ideas of creative living. To all of us, we see it as a dream of being full-time. But there is more than just quitting your job. Gilbert pointed out that you need to learn to travel comfortably with your fear. “Make space for fear. If I relax, fear relaxes. If I want creativity in my life (and I do) then I have to make space for fear.” She doesn’t mean letting run your life but recognize that it is here for the ride.

She talked about us waiting for permission to live a creative life. We don’t need anyone’s permission to live a creative life she said. Gilbert said that self-absorption is something that keeps you from creative living. “You are already creatively legitimate by nature of your mere existence here among us.”

“Stop treating your creativity like a tired, unhappy marriage. Start regarding it as with fresh eyes of a passionate lover.” Man, I love that! Sometimes you just need to be kicked in the face to understand it.

There were so many aspects of this book that I loved. It is definitely going to become one of those books that are reread yearly… I would definitely recommend that you guys check it out.

Always Remember to Date Each Other

One word of advice I’ve always heard and always told couples ‘Always remember to date each other.’  It really hit home one day in March when my mom told me her and my dad stopped at Dairy Queen. She had a smile on her face.

One of my most least favorite fast food restaurants has to be Dairy Queen. (It’s mainly because their ice cream and me don’t get along.) But over the years it has become a symbol to me due to my parents. I think almost every June when their anniversary is I always ask them what they did. Usually they have ended up at Dairy Queen. Being a smart aleck kid, I would ask them why they never really went to a fancy dinner for their anniversary. Mom would smile and said that was where they went on their first date. So every year on their anniversary they find themselves going to Dairy Queen to eat sundaes.

I guess you could say that Dairy Queen is a reminder to me to date your husband. It doesn’t matter if it’s once a week, month or year. But you need to take that time and spend it together. The smallest gestures can sometimes mean so muc. And you never want to take your partner for granted. So no matter how much money you have in the bank, take each other on a date! If you are worried about money, do something creative like a picnic in the backyard or Happy Hour Sonic drinks/shakes.

In our crazy busy world’s sometimes we really just need to remind our partners that we can take time for ourselves. Even if it’s just going for sundae’s at Dairy Queen or if you’re me, Andy’s or Orange Leaf.

Ozark Mill | Proposal Clay & April

I still can’t believe that this happened to me! I finally got to shoot my first proposal! My friends, Clay and April started talking to me about doing a family photo shoot. Right after that first discussion, Clay called me and told me he wanted me to also capture him popping the questions! I told him I would be honored and so we started to plan —dates, locations, etc.
When the big day arrived, we met at the Ozark Mill. Clay had already picked out where it was going to happen, a place super special to April. So we just took our time and just had a blast! When got to the spot, I just couldn’t stop smiling as I captured their reactions! Afterwards, Clay, April and I wondered away for some engagement pictures but I’ll save those for another day!

If you are dreaming about the right moment to propose, send me a message. I’d be honored to capture your special moment for you!

Guest Blogger | Lingerie

Valentine’s Day.

It’s that time of year again. Today, my friend Twyla is talking about what she thinks about the aspect of Lingerie.

Lingerie. When most people hear this word, they think of sex. Putting something skimpy and lacey on to entice your partner to rip it off of you in the heat of passion. For a long time, I was one of those people. Lingerie is for couples. I am not in a relationship. I have no reason to buy lingerie.

But that way of thinking has changed for me, by a scene from one of my favorite movies. The main character was admiring a beautiful piece of lingerie, and when she was told to buy it, she stated she had no one to wear it for. The next words her friend spoke resonated with me. Wear it for yourself.

Buy the lingerie. Wear it for yourself. The fabric, shape, colors, are all designed to make you feel pretty. You deserve to feel pretty. If you have a partner that makes you feel beautiful, great for you. But you don’t need someone else to tell you you’re beautiful. Put something lacey and flowy on, put your favorite movie in, and wear the lingerie for yourself!

I recently started selling Pure Romance. Yes, I sell those products! Like lingerie, the same general misconception looms: You need a partner to enjoy those products. Wrong. Like lingerie, which we sell some gorgeous pieces, our products are created to help women of every shape and size feel beautiful! So take my advice: don’t buy it for someone else, buy it for yourself!

Hidden Inspiration | Ring Shots

Rings shots are actually one of my favorite detail shots to get. They are so small and shiny that sometimes it’s hard to capture. But that’s where you creative side gets to jump in. There are tons of hidden inspiration moments everywhere in your weddings and sessions. You just have to decide what would be the best look. Sometimes you have to try a few to find out what your favorite is. Wedding days you are looking for items that the couple picked out for their wedding day. Meaningful items. I usually can find some time to just be a little creative with the rings. It’s fun to see what I can come up with. So if your photographer asks for your rings, tell them to be super careful and let them take some amazingness!

For this one, there were some fall confetti style items on the table. They just screamed fall wedding to me. So I decided to see what I could come up with… It turned into one of my favorite pictures.

On engagement shoots, it can be a little harder. There is usually not a lot of items that are just the couple. It might be you looking at your surroundings and knowing what the couple likes. If you are shooting outside in the woods, the odds are you can use anything in nature to go along. I have a tendency to incorporate anything around me like twigs, flowers, berries, leaves, etc.  Sometimes couples will bring signs or something else that means something to them. If you want the couple to bring something like that… Ask your couple to bring it.

Here are a few ring shots I got just because I looked around and got creative with what I could find.

Keep your eyes open and your creative ready to fire. Hidden Inspiration is everywhere. Be ready for it!

January | Fantasy Self Portrait

One of my favorite photographers I have followed for years used to do self portraits monthly. I was so fascinated by her goal that I tried a few times. However being very self-conscious about my body, weight etc., I always was ashamed of those images… So I would stop the project.

Fast forward to the last few years, now I’m following a boudoir photographer who probably every few weeks is taking a BOUDOIR self-portrait! Talk about guts… Talk about me needing to shut my mouth and try again.

Which brings me to my new monthly self-portrait challenge to myself. No guarantees about how long it will last this time, but… This year I’m challenging myself to come up with a fantasy styled self portrait…

10 more Things About Me

10 Thing about me!

Curious about your photographer at Peaces Photography? Well, wait no longer, here are a few things all about me!

  1. I actually don’t have a favorite style of music. I love about everything but rap and talking!
  2. I love Star Wars. (Can’t for the next episode!)
  3. I’d buy books instead of makeup.
  4. The first time I flew in a plane was when I moved to New York City for four months.
  5. While in New York, I worked at a children’s ministry called Metro Ministries.
  6. In any season, I find reasons to wear Flip Flops.
  7. Even though, I love shoes. It is one of my least favorite things to shop for…
  8. Size 11 feet make it hard to find cute shoes that fit or are cute.
  9. Pedicures are a must all year round! (So relaxing!)
  10. I had my first pedicure in 2008 and refuse to stop ever!

Curious about something else? What to know something about me?

This picture is from about two years ago… But it is definitely one of my favorites… Self portraits are not my favorite thing to take but man, are they fun to figure out!
