It’s something about photographers that we need to do crafty stuff no matter what that may be. I think it’s because we get in stuck with an idea and we need to do something to get back to where we want to be.
Well, the last three months I have been creating wheeled pottery. It’s seriously one of the most unique things I have ever done! And I love it. It is time consuming in a time when everything is instant. I was surprised to find out that the hardest part was slowing down and being patient about the end product. With using a wheel for pottery, everything is hinged on the fact that the clay will do what you trying to make it do. Most of the time, it’s not going to do what you want it to do. You are just going to have to fight with it. One girl I met after trying something for a year, finally made a chip and salsa bowl! It’s harder than you think.
There is like five main steps to do wheel pottery.
First step centering the clay, then growing the clay.
Next, trimming the piece. Making it level and giving it a foot? (still don’t understand that.)
Then they have to fire it the first time.
After they fire it, you get to paint it!
Finally they have to fire it again!
After taking the class I have learned more about myself than I ever thought I would. I am an instant person. I never would have said that before that class. I like being able to instantly see what amazing photos photographers are creating. I like being able to get the movie review before I watch the movie. I like getting crafty things done quickly. I don’t like waiting for the “paint” to dry or for the shoot to be put together.
So I guess my goal for this year is to slow down and wait for the paint to dry and be okay with it!
