Business Book — March 2016

dooverFor my March Business Book, I choose Jon Acuff’s book Do Over. His last book Start was really good so I couldn’t wait to read this one when it can out. Do Over I would say it was good as well, but in a different way.
He included exercises so you could see what relationships and skills you truly have. “Relationships get you the first gig. Skills get you the second.”

Do Over reminded me to focus on my attitude where I am right now. I have to choose my attitude everyday until it choose me back. Acuff said that attitude is a decision and what happens at work is not what should determine my attitude. I do.  I can’t just expect to get what I “deserve”…. I have to do the work and choose my attitude. (Apparently I pick these books at the right time in my life — ATTITUDE.)

Another area that really hit home was the skills section. He suggestions finding and increasing our knowledge new skills and old skills that add value to us. Of staying current and relevant in our fields. One of my favorite statements the whole book was “When you refuse to practice today, it makes it harder to practice it tomorrow. Weeds often grow stronger the longer we wait to hustle.”  Man, talk about a sucker punch. I have been putting off a lot of different skills. The first day for a real reason. The second and third for a silly reason. And now it’s super hard to get back into it. I guess it’s time to pick out the weeds and get back to work!

If you haven’t picked up, go get it. Go read it. It will help you no matter where you are at in the job world. I feel more inspired from just reading it.  If you are looking for other business books to be inspired by, check out the past business books on the blog — January, October,  and September.
